Alexander Georgievich devoted his entire life to MEPhI, where he worked at Department No. 9 from 1966. He was a renowned scientist in the field of radiation materials science and the radiation physics of condensed matter, combining deep professional knowledge with broad scientific erudition.
Under his leadership and with his direct involvement, a methodology for studying irradiated materials was developed and unique equipment was created that is still used at enterprises in the industry today. Alexander Georgievich was the author of more than 200 scientific papers, including the monograph “Helium in Reactor Materials”, as well as 9 inventions. A number of PhD theses and one DSc thesis were defended under his supervision.
Professor Zaluzhny was Deputy Chairman of the Russian Academy of Sciences Council on Radiation Physics of Solids, a member of the specialised Council of MEPhI, and Russia’s coordinator for the international RD50 project (CERN). He also served as Deputy Director and Scientific Advisor to the Director of the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP).
Alexander Georgievich devoted great attention to teaching. He worked for many years as Vice-Rector of MEPhI, took part in establishing Department No. 60, and taught his own original courses. For his contribution to science and education, he was awarded the medals “For Valorous Labour” and “In Commemoration of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow”, and was a veteran of the nuclear power and industry sector and a veteran of MEPhI.
He will forever remain in our memory not only as an outstanding scientist and teacher, but also as a brilliant storyteller, a man of great erudition and the soul of the team.
