The Department conducts the educational process at four Branches (base departments) of MEPhI at the High-Technology Research Institute of Inorganic Materials named after A.A. Bochvar (VNIINM), the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” (NRC KI), the Research Institute of the Scientific Production Association “LUCH” (NII NPO LUCH) and the A.A. Baikov Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMET RAS).
The Branch was created in 1986 by a joint order of two ministers: V.P. Elyutin of the USSR Ministry of Higher Education and E.P. Slavsky of the Minsredmash of the USSR, for the training of engineer-physicists in the specialization of “Superconductive and Special Materials for Physical and Power Engineering Plants”, subsequently changed to “Advanced Functional and Structural Materials”. The Rector of MEPhI appointed the Director of VNIINM, Academician of the USSR A.S. Nikiforov as the first Head of the Branch. At present, the Branch trains students of a specialty for the 8th and 9th semesters and undergraduates for the 1st-3rd semesters with the involvement of VNIINM specialists.
Branch of MEPhI at NRC KI
The Branch was created in 1986 by a joint order of two ministers: V.P. Elyutin of the USSR Ministry of Higher Education and E.P. Slavsky of the Minsredmash of the USSR for the training of engineer-physicists in the specialization of “Physics of Radiation Effects and Reactor Materials Science”, subsequently changed to “Solid under Extreme Conditions” at the NRC “Kurchatov Institute”. Professor P.A. Platonov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Reactor Materials and Technologies was appointed the first Head of the Branch. At present in the block of reactor materials and technologies of the Kurchatov Nuclear Technology Complex, students of specialty are trained for the 8th and 9th semesters and undergraduates for the 1st-3rd semesters with the involvement of RNC KI specialists.
The Branch was created in 1988 for the training of engineer-physicists in the specialization “Materials and Technologies for Direct Energy Conversion Plants”, later changed to “Materials and Technologies for New Energy Sources”. The Director of NII NPO LUCH, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ivan Ivanovich Fedik was appointed the first Head of the Branch. At present, the Branch trains students of a specialty for the 8th and 9th semesters and undergraduates for the 1st-3rd semesters with the involvement of specialists from NII NPO “LUCH”.
The Branch was created in 1990 for the training of engineer-physicists in the specialization “Materials with Non-Equilibrium Phases”. Professor Mikhail Mikhailovich Myshlyaev, Head of the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy of IMET RAS was appointed the first Head of the Branch. At present, the Branch trains students of specialty for the 8th and 9th semesters and undergraduates for the 1st-3rd semesters with the involvement of IMET RAS specialists.
