A research project led by Artem Klauz, a postgraduate student at Department No. 9 “Physical Problems of Materials Science”, titled “Study of the mechanisms of radiation degradation of reduced-activation austenitic steel”, has received grant support from the Russian Science Foundation (RSF). The work addresses a fundamental problem in fusion power engineering — the development of structural materials capable of withstanding the extreme conditions inside tokamak-type reactors.
A key part of the research will be carried out using the university’s unique instrumentation. Detailed analysis of the chemical composition and nanostructure of the materials will be performed using the “ATOTOM” tomographic atom probe, a laser-evaporation instrument developed directly by NRNU MEPhI specialists. The use of domestic high-tech equipment will allow the researchers to study the evolution of defects at the atomic level under the influence of irradiation.
